Coughs
Coughing is the body's way of removing mucus and dust from the lungs. It occurs when the windpipe is irritated by something. Coughing does not damage the lungs. It helps to protect the lungs from serious infection. A coughing child will not choke or stop breathing.
What you can do
•Suck Lozenges
•Take warm drinks, e.g. Hot ribena, honey and lemon.
•Cough linctus is available from your local pharmacy
Contact your doctor if...
•The Coughing Produces blood
•If breathing is accompanied by a pain in the chest, or shortness of breath
•If your cough has lasted more than two weeks
•you have a high temperature and a cough lasting more than five days
•if a child with these symptoms is not swallowing.
Call 999 for an Ambulance if:
•you have severe breathing difficulties
•you notice that your child’s lips are bluish in colour
